Third Annual Masters Tournament Players and Sponsors 1985 News Feature Twin Galaxies Sets 3rd Video Masters Tournament; Players & Sponsors Team To Benefit CARE's Campaign for Africa Twin Galaxies, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records' as the official industry scorekeeper, has announced that its 1985 Video Game Masters Tournament (an annual competition for the records book) will function as a "Campaign for Africa" fund-raiser benefiting Ethiopia and other drought-stricken nations of Africa through CARE (the world relief and development agency). The third annual tournament will be held June 28-30 at arcades throughout the United States and Canada. Twin Galaxies is now signing up tournament locations with applications accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. It is important to note, said Twin Galaxies spokesman Steve Harris, that even though the records book currently lists nearly 100 videos, not all titles are necessary for the location to participate. Only one arcade location (or chain) will be the official site(s) in any city, he explained, Operators are not only welcomed, but encouraged to nominate one of their locations as an official tourney site. As an enticement for operators to participate in the charity fund raising portion of the tournament, Twin Galaxies will present an "arcade" of new games to the location that generates the greatest amount of proceeds. It is expected that most of the money will be raised through a variety of pre-contest promotions, such as a donations jar on the counter of setting aside a day where all proceeds from a particular game would be donated to the "Campaign for Africa," Harris suggested. The prize "arcade" includes a Cinemat System 'Cerberus' from Cinematronics and an Exidy 'Cheyenne' gun game. At this writing, Twin Galaxies was contacting SNK about adding its 'Hal 21' conversion and Data East about contributing its 'Kung-Fu Master' dedicated video. (The players who score highest on these special games will actually receive one as their reward.) Twin Galaxies is supporing all o9perators (who participate with slick promotional packages that include posters, shirts, caps, stickers, press releases, contest manuals, player registration forms and a special "How-to-Promote" booklet detailing different ways to build player response. All this is sent to ensure the operator a simple, but very successful tournament, Harris said. Twin Galaxies will also promote the event on the local and national levels with an advertising campaign in 'Computer Entertainment' magazine (a consumer magazine with the largest circulation, according to Twin Galaxies). Each tournament location will also be encouraged to place an ad in the magazine to inform potential players of the contest in their area. On the days of the contest, the operator will collect a $5 entry fee from each player, half of which will go to CARE, the other half to himself. The videos will remain on 25 cent play, so both the operator and the location can count on their usual split, but with increased revenues, Harris pointed out. Add to that the media coverage and the eligibility to win free video games, and the tournament "will be extremely profitable for every participating operator," he added. The players, on the other hand, have a chance at the fame of being listed in the "1986 Guinness Book of World Records. Twin Galaxies founder Walter Day said operators have until mid-June to sign up, but added the promised exclusivity may not allow for late sign-ups in all areas. If interested, contact Walter Day or Steve Harris at 1701 NE 69th St., Kansas City, MO 64118; 816-436-578. The June 28-30, 1985 Third Annual Masters Contest of Video Games was conducted in 38 cities in North America for the Guinness Book of World Records. These contest results were tabulated and sent to the Guinness Book of World Records by Walter Day of Twin Galaxies. www.twingalaxies.com
